The New Year's matchup

The matchup between Asseco Arka Gdynia and Trefl Sopot has always been a fiery one. Luckily, the emotions associated have always been positive in the past years, and we hope for this trend to continue on the 1st of January 2019, when both teams will play at Ergo Arena, right on the border between Gdańsk and Sopot.

Trefl is facing a lot of problems with a 2-10 win-loss balance, taking the 15th place in the table. The yellow-and-black team is led by the finnish coach Jukka Toijala, and are rebuilding themselves from scratch.

Przemysław Frasunkiewicz's Arka is in a reverse situation. Gdynia is taking win after win, loosing only two of their twelve matches. It allows them to take the place of the runner up of Energa Basket Liga.

Sopot has a very steady first five, who are way ahead of the rest of the team. The lead is the experienced Polish forward (also playing as a center) Paweł Leończyk (14.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists). He is supported by the Serbian center Milan Milovanović (14.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists). Both play alongside the US play maker Ian Baker (13.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.3 steals), while the long shots are delivered by another US player, measuring at 192 cm defender Vernon Taylor (14.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.3 steals). The black horse of the yellow-and-black team is the talented "combo", 19 year old Łukasz Kolenda (9.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals).

Trefl suffers both in the offense as well as defense. Sopot is loosing a lot of point, scoring an average of 10 points less than Arka. Gdynia, statistically, is ahead in every aspect. From a basketball player's perspective, it is a shame to see our rival so weakened. But, as the old saying goes, the only way to verify strength is rivalry.

Please feel invited on the 1st of January 2019 at 18:00 to Ergo Arena. Let's cheer Asseco Arka Gdynia right at the beginning of a new, exciting year!
