Asseco Arka Gdynia has began a new year with Energa Basket Liga with a close, but prestigious away match. Yellow-and-blues have gone played next door a Ergo Arena against Trefl.
The hosts have given a hard time to Przemysław Frasunkiewicz's team, but ultimately yielded and Gdynia won 89:84.

As opposed to previous years, there was no stage fright from any of the teams. Gdynia score was opened with the hallmark of Tricity basketball, Filip Dylewicz (8 points, 3 rebounds). He was followed quickly by James Florence (22 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists), Josh Bostic (17 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 1 steal) and the irreplacable Deividas Dulkys (5 points, 4 rebounds). Arka dominated on the court, and after a three point shot from Dariusz Wyka (7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) managed to score a 13 point advantage. The first quarter ended with a definite lead by the yellow-and-blues 24:11.

After that hard a hit, the game became more even. The second quarter was oponed by an accurate shot by Marcel Ponitka (7 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal). Trefl went into an offensive and did all they could to lower the guest advantage. Gdynia's game weakened a bit, but quickly came back and at the back end of the quarter, after shots from Robert Upshaw (14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks) and three pointers from Bostic and Florence, again claimed the 13 point advantage. The hosts won that part of the game (28:22), but the guests left for the break with a total advantage of 46:39.

After the break, the game evened out once more. Asseco controlled the game, but Sopot was counterattacking hard. Florence remained active, assisted by Bostic and Upshaw. At the end, Ponitka and Krzysztof Szubarga (6 points, 1 assist) showed off with three point shots, which allowed Arka to win the quarter 23:21 and approached the last quarter with 69:60 points to their name.

The last quarter saw a dangerous lowering of Arka's advantage. The hosts got wind in their sails and used that accordingly. Florence was still on a roll, supported by Bostic, with an important three point shot by Szubarga allowing Asseco to keep their score. The deciding touch was delivered by a dunk from Upshaw, ending the game with Asseco Arka Gdynia winning against Trefl Sopot 89:84.

A tough game, with a nicely held advantage by Gdynia and a suprising, albiet a happy ending. After some rest, this Sunday on 6th of January, another away game against a strong oponnent - Polski Cukier Toruń.
