The first matches of the Energa Basket Liga are behind Asseco Arka Gdynia, and now the team is off to participate in the prestigious Tricity derby. This time, the hosts will be Trefl Sopot and the Gdansk Ergo Arena. The commencement will take place on Sunday, 20th of September at 17:35.
The black-and-yellow team, led by coach Marcin Stefanski, have played three matches so far. They lost against Stelmet Enea BC Zielona Gora 71:76, but then won against PGE Spojnia Stargard 91:81 and Anwil Wloclawek 89:74. A good start for Sopot, making them 7th in the table.
Much lower, on 14th place, is Gdynia, with coach Przemyslaw Frasunkiewicz's team being one match short. Asseco won against Arged BMSlam Stal Ostrow Wielkopolski 74:64, but won against Pszczolka Start Lublin 68:79.
Watchin Sopot in their pre-season matches, one can see a well constructed, balanced strategy with attention put to both formations and teamwork as a whole, making it clear that Sopot is aiming high in the League. The team includes frontcourt Pawel Leonczyk (12.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists), a great Torun thrower Karol Gruszecki (17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals) and young playmaker Lukasz Kolenda (11.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists).
The remaining team includes center Dominik Olejniczak (10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 2.3 blocks), Michal Kolenda (10.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists) and the "beard brothers": Tyson Jay Haws (10.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists) and Martynas Paliukenas (4.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists). The ace in the hole of Sopot is the US forward Darious Moten (9.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals).
The opponents appear strong, but Asseco is also no slouch and with some focus and a good start, they can definitely give Sopot a run for their money. As is with Trefl, Arka's greatest strength lies in teamwork and a quick pace, which may be just enough to pull through.
Please feel invited this Sunday at 17:30 to Ergo Arena.
