Tuesday, 5th of November, was not a good time for Asseco Arka Gdynia. The yellow-and-blues took on EWE Baskets Oldenburg at the Gdynia Arena in a 7DAYS EuroCup. Despite leading all the way up to the third quarter, they have lost by 10 points 61:73.
The first minutes of the match saw Gdynia on the ropes. EWE was determined to get payback for their 74:78 loss and was constantly on the attack. The first points for Asseco were scored by Krzysztof Szubarga (19 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists) and it was him and Bartlomiej Woloszyn (9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal) who kept the score up in the first half. The guests were on the move and led 16:8 2 minutes before the end of the first quarter. A free throw by Josh Bostic (7 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists) and points by Devonte Upson (5 points, 5 rebounds) did not provide much comfort, and EWE won 20:12.
THe beginning of the second quarter saw the advantage of the guests continue, but Gdynia managed minute by minute to regain balance. Wołoszyn and Szubarga remained active, but Armani Moore (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block) also added some points into the mix. A great throw by Dariusz Wyka (3 points, 2 rebounds) tied the game 32:32 30 seconds before the end of the first half.
After some rest Asseco went all in. Gdynia was on the offensive and the guests could not find a proper response. Szubarga was doing his best, joined by Bostic, Leyton Hammonds (4 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal) and Ben Emelogu (7 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist). In the 26th minue, after a free throw by Moore, Arka managed the highest, 10 point advantage (47:37) and it seemed that they were on their way to another victory. As it turned out, that was the tipping points. Oldenburg woke up, whilst Gdynia took a dive. Their advantage was disappearing minute by minute. Before the end of the third quarter, Asseco was still in the lead with a 55:47 score.
The fourth quarter saw a complete breakdown of the yellow-and-blues. First Arka points came in no sonner than in the 8th minute, thanks to Bostics free throws. EWE retook the lead and was building up a score. Szubarga and Hammonds attempted to change the course, but in the end, Asseco Arka Gdynia lost at Gdynia Arena 61:73 against EWE Baskets Oldenburg.
A very physically taxing match (Woloszyn ended with a bandaged head) with a huge fluctuation of intensity. Arka did not show good teamwork (10 points). Only Szubarga and Wołoszyn remained active, but that was not enough.
Best to move on to the next match, which will happen this Friday, 8th of November in an away match against Torun.
