The holiday break was a time of relaxation, but its end has brought a certain sense of nervousness - is the team ready for another match, are the players ready? Asseco Arka Gdynia came out victorious from this test by defeating Polpharma Starogard Gdański 100:69 at Gdynia Arena in the Energa Basket Liga.
It is worthy of note that the Kociewian Devils are very weakened and occupying the last place in the PLK table. It doesn't lessen the fact that the yellow-and-blues played well, with a lot of teamwork and high three-pointer accuracy.
Phil Greene IV (15 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 3 steals), the US playmaker, is back from an injury, and along with team captain Krzysztof Szubarga (15 points, 1 rebound, 4 assists, 1 steal) were the leaders of the Gdynia attack. Asseco dominated through all 40 minutes, whose main weakness was the small rotation - 51 vs 6 of the hosts in points garnered by the bench players.
Josh Bostic (13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block) began the scoring, followed up by Szubarga and Ben Emelogu (10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal). Arka was ramping up and after 3 minutes was winning 10:4. Around the middle of the first quarter, after Szubarga three pointer, it was 18:9 for the yellow-and-blues, and the pressure was constant. Bartłomiej Wołoszyn (9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists) and Wojciech Czerlonko (9 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists) added theirs, as did Dariusz Wyka (7 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block) and Devonte Upson (4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block). After the first 10 minutes, Asseco was in a 31:15 lead. Kociewo could not respond.
The next quarter saw Gdynia continuing its domination. Bostic and Greene were scoring three-point shots, Wyka ruled in the front. Leyton Hammonds (7 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist) scored a three pointer a minute before the end, followed up by the same from Emelogu. Arka was in the lead by 25 points (55:30).
The short break did not change the situation. Polpharma was the same, its players spent. Asseco was dominating everywhere, Bostic, Wołoszyn and Emelogu scored from distance, Szubarga and Greene organized the play, Wyka, Hammonds, Upson and Adam Hrycaniuk (4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist) went uncontested in the painted zone. A well aimed three pointer ended the quarter, delivered by Wojtek Czerlonko.
The last 10 minutes saw the guests desintegrate completely. Kociewo was not able to find open positions, and when they did, they could not score. Arka was scoring everything they could. Grzegorz Kamiński (4 points, 1 rebound) scored the free throws. Two minutes before the end, Marci Malczyk (3 points,1 rebound, 1 asssist) finished the matter with a Czerlonko lay-up. Arka Gdynia defeated Polpharma Starogard Gdański 100:69 at Gdynia Arena, and this Friday, 10th of January, the yellow-and-blues will take on PGE Spójnia Starogard.
