Asseco Arka Gdynia was aiming high in today's Energa Basket Liga derby match against Trefl Sopot at Ergo Arena. The match turned out to be a major sports event, as predicted. A lot of cheering came from the crowd, especially so from the Fanclub of the yellow-and-blues.

As opposed to the previous matches, both teams went straight at it in an open, daring game. Gdynia came on top, leading 53:38 until the break and then pushing through to win the overall match 86:79.

The score was opened by Asseco's US forward Leyton Hammonds (8 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal), followed up quickly by team captain Krzysztof Szubarga (16 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal). "The Admiral" seemed quite motivated and was motivating his team members constantly. Adam Hrycaniuk (12 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist) fought at the front along with Devonte Upson (9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block), and 11 points fell prey to Josh Bostic (23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block). The US scorer had a great match, although momentary lapses were not avoided.

The second quarter saw Arka dominating, with Szubarga and Bostic being supported by Phil Greene IV (13 points, 3 assists). Bartłomiej Wołoszyn (2 rebounds, 4 assists) noted a weaker match, but did perform admirably in the defense. Arka managed to increase it's advantage and left for the break with 53:38 to their name.

It seemed that the match was pretty much decided, but that was proven false. Trefl tightened their defenses and attacked hard, putting their bets on strategy rather than haste. Arka began loosing ground. They managed only 9 points (Hrycaniuk, Greene, Hammonds) and the advantage fell to 62:61. Trefl took back 14 points (23:9) in the third quarter.

The last quarter saw Asseco calming down and slowly taking back the initiative. Bostic and Hrycaniuk played well together, while Szubarga maintained leadership. Upson and Greene scored important points and ultimately, Arka was regaining their score. After free throws by Upson and Greene, Asseco won against Trefl Sopot 79:86.

An important win which was the result of teamwork, strong will and a strong frontcourt. The cheering from the Fanclub made this a great derby match.

Now a short break before the 26th of January, Sunday, and an away match at Gliwice against GTK.
