Asseco Arka Gdynia came to Gliwice for a rematch against GTK in a Energa Basket Liga game. The hosts defeated the yellow-and-blues at the beginning of the season 87:78 and Arka managed to even the score. After a fierce finale, where team captain Krzysztof Szubarga (15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal) excelled, the guests defeated GTK Gliwice 82:74.
The first minutes saw Gdynia attack straight away. Adam Hrycaniuk (13 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steal) opened up scoring along with Josh Bostic (14 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal), and the duo was the main offensive force of Gdynia in the first half. "The Beast" managed to keep up 100% accuracy for a very long time, until it dropped to 83.3% after the first half. After the first 3 minutes Asseco was in the lead 9:0. GTK began the counteroffensive and quickly managed a draw, then went ahead 12:9. That was all that Gliwice managed. Arka speeded things up and after Marcin Malczak's (3 points) and Phil Green's IV (12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals), the first quarter was won 25:15.
The guests were on a roll, minute by minute increasing their leade. Szubarga was joined by Bartłomiej Wołoszyn (5 points, 2 rebounds), whereas Hrycaniuk was supported by Devonte Upson (14 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal) and Dariusz Wyka (11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks). Gdynia dominated up until the break, leading 43:28.
The break saw both teams catching a second breath. Asseco jumped ahead after points from "The Admiral" and Leyton Hammonds (6 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal) which saw 22 points of lead. Gliwice took the initiative, tightening the defense and slowly taking back their losses. Asseco could not find it's way to the hoop, with Upson being the sole exception. The yellow-and-blue's advantage was shrinking, with the third quarter seeing the score at 61:56.
The last quarter came to a two-sided clinch. After 4 minutes Arka increased their score by 1, and the oponnents did so by 4. The scoreboard showed 62:60 for Asseco and the situation was growing uncomfortable. That was the moment when a three pointer was garnered by Greene and Szubarga, along with Hrycaniuk, Bostic and Upson took to the floor and led Asseco Arka Gdynia to a 82:74 win against GTK Gliwice.
Another exciting match with good accuracy (45%) and too many losses (17). A week of break and on the 2nd of February we are off to Gdynia Arena against Śląsk Wrocław.
