After a lot of rotational changes, Asseco Arka Gdynia has played an Energa Basket Liga away match against BM Slam Stal Ostrów Wlkp. The yellow-and-blues were in the lead for most of the match, but fortune favored the hosts near the end and it was they who won 63:62. The best thrower of Gdynia was Josh Bostic (24 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) and the court saw for the first time Kyndall Dykes (9 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal) and center Mickell Gladness (3 rebounds, 1 block).
From minute one the hosts attacked hard and managed to dominate the initial portion of the match. The first points of the away team were scored by Bostic, who was followed by Dariusz Wyka (4 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block), Phil Greene IV (8 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists) and Leyton Hammonds (9 points, 8 rebounds). Asseco began leading in the 5th minute, 14:9, with Dykese's points ending the quarter 21:12 for Arka.
In the second quarter, Ostrów made up the losses and kept close to the guests. Bostic and Greene remained active, with Hammonds handling the front/backcourt and Bartłomiej Wołoszyn (6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal) scoring a three-pointer right before the break. Both teams played responsibly, avoiding overreaching. The hosts were ever closer and were separated from the lead only by 4 points by the break.
After returning to the court, Asseco attacked Stal hard. Hammonds scored well initially, but Arka quickly became tired. Ostrów tightened their defense and it was increasingly hard fighting open positions for scoing. After some minutes, Wołoszyn and Hammonds scored a three-pointer each, along with Bostic and 2 points from team captain Krzysztof Szubarga (2 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal), but it was too little. The yellow-and-blues could not fall into rhythm, which their oponnents used well. The quarter ended with a 52:52 tie, but it was a bad sign.
The last 10 minutes saw an even fight. Stal jumped ahead some, but Gdynia always caught up. Bostic was the most active, with the last points being garnered by Wyka. In the end, Asseco Arka Gdynia lost the match against BM Slam Stal Ostrów Wlkp 62:63.
13 losses and only 28% accuracy in long-range throws are the main reasons behind this defeat. Arka debuted two new players, who cannot yet be judged as to their effectivness. Let's hope both gents will show their best in the following matches. Next week, on the 6th of March, Gdynia Arena will see Polski Cukier Toruń arrive.
